About Us

What We Do

Founded in 1979, Shropshire Family History Society is dedicated to researching, preserving and sharing the history of the families who have called Shropshire, England their home. We have a passion for genealogy and family history and are keen to share that enthusiasm and our knowledge with others as they also explore their family roots.

We have more than 1000 members from across the world. Membership is open to anyone interested in family history - you don’t have to have ancestors from Shropshire or live in the county. More details and ways of joining can be found here

We publish a quarterly Journal in March, June, September and December each year which is sent to all members. Back copies are also accessible in the Members’ area of the website.

We are a registered Charity (No: 514014), a member of the Federation of Family History Societies (FHF) and the Friends of Shropshire Archives

We hold regular online meetings for our members and occasional in-person events. Details of these can be found through our News and Events pages

We participate in a digital Journal exchange scheme with some other family history societies. These can be viewed in the Members' area of the website.

Our Help Desk

Volunteers from the Society can be found at the Help Desk within Shropshire Archives every Thursday morning between 10am-1pm and from 1pm-4pm on the last Thursday of each month.

Our volunteers can offer help on a variety of topics, including helping those new to Family History or those who are searching for a particular resource or record. Assistance is also available in the use of the many sources of information e.g. computers, microfilm/fiche, census indexes, parish registers, maps etc.

For full opening hours of Shropshire Archives see their website at www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.
